Power
Numerous forklifts are designed to run on propane gas. Forklifts which utilize propane are simple to refill. The gas is stored inside a pressurized tank on the truck's rear. The propane is pushed into the engine, where it is converted into vapor and then the vapor combines with air. The forklift throttle is utilized to control the vapor flow. A spark plug ignites the mix of vapor and air creating pressure that moves the pistons. The pistons turn the wheels and run the hydraulic pump.

Because the kinds of forklifts that are operated by propane are clean burning and have low emissions, they are best to be used in warehouses and other buildings.

Hydraulics
The forklift's hydraulic system is what enables it to raise and move really heavy objects from location to location. A pump, tubes and cylinders make up the hydraulic system. The pump forces dense fluid through the tubing and into the cylinders. The pressure build up pushes a piston, that raises the forks. When the operator lowers the forks, the hydraulic fluid flows out of the cylinders and back into the pump.

Steering
Propane forklifts work well where maneuverability is necessary. Unlike an automobile, a forklift makes use of its rear wheels to pivot, which allows the forklift to turn fast on a tight radius.
